How We Pick Our Multi-Species Cover Crops!
Source: JTAC Farms
Today we are talking about how we pick out our multi-species cover crop here on JTAC Farms! I have had quite a few requests to walk y’all through our process. First, start out with the “why” or purpose of the cover crop. What is it meant to do? Many times when you answer the “why,” it helps you narrow down the the species you want to choose from. Our cover crop is wearing many hats. It’s providing cow chow, stopping erosion, cycling nutrients, fixing nitrogen, and suppressing weeds. It also needs to have warm season growth potential in addition to some cool-season over-wintering ability. Then, I hedge my bets by dialing the bio-diversity up to 11. It may seem easy, but it took a lot of trial and error to get the blend we’ve got now.
