Interseeding with a Drone
Source: Between the Lakes Demonstration Farm Network
Demonstration Farmer Zak Kenneke discusses his experience interseeding a cover crop mix into a cornfield using a drone application. The goal with interseeding is to establish a cover crop before the corn is harvested to prevent soil erosion and improve soil health. Zak is trying different seeding rates and a diverse mix of species like clovers, buckwheat, and rye grass. Zak recommends starting with a drill for better seed placement if you’re just getting started with interseeding, as aerial application can be finicky. Herbicide management is also a key factor for success with interseeding. Reach out to your agronomist for help designing your herbicide plan.
